Exploring rivers,
trails, and our place in nature.

Welcome, and thank you for visiting my website. I’ve spent my adult life in journalism, writing for many years now about nature, the condition of the environment, and adventure travel. I am especially interested in the rivers, mountains, plants, and animals we share the world with. I am Connecticut-centered, but travel often throughout the rest of New England and the U. S., occasionally beyond.

Decades ago, when I decided to focus my writing on the natural world, I did so thinking that by showcasing the joys and satisfactions of outdoor recreation and the beauty of nature I might draw others into a deeper appreciation of nature that would in turn advance the conservation ethic. I still feel that way.

Wandering, Wondering.

My journal is a place for me to relate my experiences in the outdoors, reflect upon those experiences, and share photographs of what I have seen. I spend a lot of time paddling a canoe, kayak or raft exploring rivers, lakes and coastal waters, and I hike on trails throughout the country. I’ll stop to snap a pic of a wildflower, a bird, an especially striking tree - or a landscape that brings a smile to my face.

Searching for Perspective, Light
and a Moment in Time.

“He who knows the most, he who knows what sweets and virtues are in the ground, the waters, the plants, the heavens, and how to come at these enchantments, is the rich and royal man.”

— Ralph Waldo Emerson, from his classic 19th Century essay “Nature.”

Some images I’ve captured over many years of birding, a nature study genre that leads to a deeper appreciation of many kinds of habitat.

  • Exploring Rivers

Count me among those drawn to rivers. For decades I’ve paddled rivers throughout North America, especially in New England.

  • Hiking Trails

I’ve hiked throughout the U. S. especially in New England. Here is my daughter, Allison, and I on the Appalachian Trail in CT in 1995.

    Outdoor Yoga

Outdoor yoga has become more popular in recent years, especially since the pandemic. Rightly so, because yoga and fresh air are a terrific combination. I’ve practiced on mountaintops, forests, riverbanks, beaches, snow-covered trails and shady lawns. Namaste!

  • Landscapes

I try to keep a camera with me as I travel, and I especially love coming upon scenery that stimulates a sensitivity to the grandeur and value of nature.

  • Wildflowers

Whether, forest, meadow, mountaintop, riverbank or trailside, you will find wildflowers. The colors are often spectacular, and the characteristics of the myriad species ever fascinating. Identifying them, learning their habitats and blooming times is a most pleasant addition to a day in the outdoors.
